The Feast of St Luke the Physician

The readings for St Luke’s Day are: Isaiah 35:5-8; Psalm 124; II Timothy 4:5-11; and Luke 4:14-21.

You can listen to Seminarian Paul’s sermon here:

We celebrate St Luke as one of the authors of the 4 Gospel accounts. The third gospel is named for him and the Acts of the Apostles are also from the same author. While we know little about the authors of biblical texts, we believe Luke was writing to a Gentile community and that he traveled with Paul for at least part of his church-planting journey. Luke includes some of the most beloved stories in the New Testament. Among them, are the famous “birth narrative” we share every Christmas Eve, the “Gospel Canticles” we still sing in worship, and some of the more famous parables (The Good Samaritan and The Prodigal Son chief among them). Luke also includes more stories involving women and other marginalized community than any other gospel writer. Because of many of the stories and themes of the gospel attributed to him, we believe that Luke was a Physician, a healer. Because of this, we celebrated a Service of Healing during worship on Sunday.

May the God of All Healing wrap you in Resurrection warmth and carry you on wings of healing now and in the days ahead.
